Hermes Agent Deep Cuts: The Intelligence of Discovery
Hermes Agent Deep Cuts: The Intelligence of Discovery
Run npx skills find "calculate distance" and watch what happens. Hermes doesn’t just “know” the answer; it identifies the most relevant tool, describes its parameters, and executes it in a single fluid motion. It’s the difference between a chef who memorizes every recipe (a heavy model) and a chef who knows exactly which spice rack to reach for when a dish calls for it (a routed agent).
The Mechanism
At its core, Hermes uses a Skills-First Routing architecture. Instead of dumping every possible tool into the model’s immediate context—which causes “context rot” and token bloat—Hermes treats its capabilities as a library.
When you issue a command, Hermes performs a three-stage discovery:
- Discovery:
find-skillsscans the registry for relevant keywords. - Description:
tool_describepulls the specific JSON schema for the winner(s). - Execution:
tool_callinjects the schema into the model, allowing it to map your intent to the correct parameters.
This allows Hermes to handle over 170 deferred capabilities without making the model “confused” by the sheer volume of options.
Advanced Usage
For the daily operator, the power lies in composition. You don’t just call a skill; you chain them via the find logic.
The “Smart” Find:
Instead of hardcoding a tool, use find-skills with a descriptive query to let the agent decide.
# Instead of just calling 'web_search'
npx skills find "find the latest news on quantum computing"
The “Multi-Tool” Pipeline:
You can batch independent reads in a single turn, leveraging the fact that find-skills can handle multiple queries in parallel.
# Find tools for three different tasks simultaneously
npx skills find ["weather", "stock price", "news"]
The Gotcha
The “Name-Only” Trap: A common mistake is assuming find-skills provides the full definition. It only returns the name. If you try to call a tool that hasn’t been “described” yet, the model might hallucinate the parameters. Always ensure your workflow follows the Find $\rightarrow$ Describe $\rightarrow$ Call sequence for new tools.
Verification
To verify that routing is working correctly, run a query with a broad term like “travel” and observe which tools are pulled. If it selects google_maps and weather without you explicitly naming them, the discovery engine is successfully narrowing the world down to your immediate needs.
